August 26th, 2017 was a special day for our people around the Chicago area, where they celebrated the first annual Assyrian food festival hosted by the Holy Apostolic Catholic Assyrian Church of the East, Diocese of the Eastern United states.
The festival was a two-day event held in an outdoor park district on August 26 & 27, it included delicious authentic Assyrian food, live music and dancing, gift shops and art exhibits and even children had a part of it.
The event was a real opportunity for other cultures to learn about the Assyrian heritage. The opening ceremony contained a display of the Assyrian alphabet along with the national anthem and it was aired on Channel ABC7 by our lovely reporter Diane Pathieu who was the MC.
The place was filled with joy when HG Mar Paulus Benjamin and HG Mar Gewargis Younan walked around together greeting and blessing the large numbers of attendees from our people and people from other cultures.
And the most interesting thing was that Assyrian dollars were the only currency accepted in the event, where people exchanged their US Dollars to Assyrian dollars in order to take a part. It was definite that everyone enjoyed their time, the food was great and the entertainment was amusing, and we are looking for many more to come.
